Document Design

I found the basic concepts of document design that we talked about in class today to be very interesting. Based on past experiences, I understand the importance of having a document that is easy for the reader to view and understand, but I did not know what concepts were essential to creating a good document. Now that I know Contrast, Repetition, Alignment, and Proximity are the fundamental parts of creating a good document, I think that I will have an easier time making aesthetically pleasing documents that will be effective in the business world. I am looking to applying this principles in my future assignments.

Week 1 - Communication

During class this week, we talked about effective communication in a business setting. I think the part of this chapter that I found to be the most interesting was the section relating to the benefits of effective communication in a workplace. I did not realize all of the benefits associated with having good communicators as employees. Some of the benefits of effective communication I learned this week were faster problem solving, better use of time, less internal communication conflicts, better feedback from coworkers, more efficient messages, and the occurrence of less problems or misunderstandings. I think that the due to the many benefits associated with effective communication, employers and employees should both try to improve their communication skills. This could potentially cut back on costs because would would get done faster, make an office a more peaceful and productive environment because there would be less conflict among workers, and many other things as well. It might be a good idea for employers to offer a workshop to their employees to help improve their communication skills since the benefits to the company are obvious and numberous. After reading this chapter, I know realize just how important it is to be an effective communicator and I hope I have the chance to improve my communication skills throughout college so I will one day be a good employee and potentially have a better chance of getting a job.

Course Expectations

After looking over the syllabus and attending the first day of class, I am still not completely sure on what to expect during the class but I have a few things I hope to learn during the semester. My most important expectation for this class is that I learn how to write a good, professional resume that will help me get a job upon graduation. I think that learning this during the semester is going to be extremely useful during my life. Some of my other expectations are to learn how to write professional documents, such as memos, cover letters, and professional emails. Since I want to go into a nursing career, I can see some applications where this knowledge will be useful, but I think that I will spend more time reading these documents rather than writing them. However, I think that it is good knowledge to have in case I ever need to write one of those types of documents. I also expect to have a decent amount of group work in this class, based on what I have heard from others who have already taken the course, and I expect to get a good grade in the class.
Overall, I think that the knowledge I attain in this class will be very useful and I am looking forward to starting the course material. I don't think this class will be like any of my other English classes, which is a good thing since I am not a big fan of writing research papers and other documents like that.
